Kenmare County Kerry Town Street Black and White Photography
Parked Cars and Shopfronts Beneath a Wide Clouded Sky
The road gives this Kenmare photograph a clear path through the town. I photographed the street in County Kerry, Ireland, with cars parked along both sides and shopfronts continuing into the distance. The nearest buildings are large enough to study individually, but their repeated windows and rooflines gradually gather into a narrower view toward the hills beyond.
I like the balance between the two sides of the street. They are similar in height without being identical. Signs project from some façades, awnings cover others, and different window arrangements break up the rows. The parked cars add lower shapes along the road, leaving the centre open enough for its direction to stay clear.
The sky has a much less regular structure. Broad clouds fill the space above the buildings, with darker areas near the middle and brighter edges higher in the view. In black and white, those tones become part of the same composition as the pale walls and darker storefronts below.
Road markings in the foreground provide a nearby point of scale before the street recedes. I kept them within the square frame alongside the clouds and shopfronts, so the view has detail at more than one distance. What interests me is the ordinary arrangement of a town street, made distinct by the particular buildings, cars and weather in front of the camera. The photograph holds the long perspective without losing those smaller differences along the way.
