Smooth Gypsum Ridges Under a Layered New Mexico Sky
Smooth white dunes rise beneath a sky crowded with clouds at White Sands in New Mexico. The nearest ridge curves gently across the foreground, its shaded face creating a soft dark fold. Beyond the dunes, rugged mountains form a lower band beneath the much more active sky.
I was drawn to the difference between the ground and the clouds. The sand has broad, uninterrupted shapes, while the sky changes from small scattered patches to larger billowing forms near the horizon. Keeping so much sky in the photograph allows that contrast to become the main subject, with the dunes providing a quiet foundation below.
The foreground still has detail worth lingering over. Fine marks run along the pale slope, and the dune’s edge leads toward another crest farther back. Light describes those surfaces with gradual shifts rather than hard outlines. The mountains behind offer a rougher texture, linking the soft sand to the more intricate cloud shapes above.
I photographed this view in 2010. Black and white brings the scene together through tone, making the gypsum dunes feel bright without losing their contours. It is a landscape for someone who enjoys desert photography with both open space and a strong sky. I like how the photograph lets stillness and activity share the frame: the dunes appear settled for this moment, while the clouds suggest a sky continuing to change above them.
