Brooklyn Domino Sugar Plant | Black and White Waterfront Photograph
An Industrial Chimney Rises Beneath Sweeping Clouds Along the River
I photographed Brooklyn’s Domino sugar plant in 2017, with the river in front and a broad sweep of cloud above the waterfront. The tall chimney gives the black and white image its clearest vertical line. Around it, the factory’s dense rows of windows sit beside newer-looking buildings and visible work along the shore.
That wider setting is part of what interests me. I did not isolate the industrial building from its neighbours; the photograph keeps the different scales and surfaces together. The darker factory facade has a weight that contrasts with the lighter window grid on the right, while low shoreline structures and equipment make a complicated band beneath them. The river adds a rougher texture across the foreground, separating the camera’s view from the buildings.
The sky occupies more than half the composition. Its long cloud shapes draw the eye across the frame, giving the relatively compact group of buildings more room and a stronger outline. In monochrome, the factory’s windows and chimney remain distinct without colour competing with the larger pattern of water and cloud. For me, the photograph holds a particular waterfront moment: the industrial structure still clearly present, its surroundings visibly changing, and the river continuing across the foreground. As a print, it offers a Brooklyn city view with enough distance to see how the plant belongs to the broader shoreline rather than standing alone.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
