Rooftops and Tree-Lined Streets Across a Broad City View
From above, Charleston becomes a close arrangement of rooftops, streets and trees. My photograph takes in a broad section of the South Carolina city, with nearer buildings clearly defined and more distant areas becoming finer in detail. A small strip of horizon remains at the top, while most of the frame is devoted to the city itself.
I am drawn to the changes in scale across this view. Smaller pitched roofs cluster in the foreground, with larger blocks and taller buildings farther back. Tree canopies interrupt the rows of architecture, creating softer patches between pale roofs and darker streets. The roads provide routes through the composition, sometimes clearly visible and sometimes partly concealed by buildings or foliage. I find that following them changes the way the image is read: what first looks dense begins to separate into connected areas.
Black and white keeps attention on those relationships rather than on the colour of individual buildings. Bright roof surfaces contrast with shadows and trees, and repeated windows add detail to the larger facades. My aerial perspective holds these different elements together without making one landmark the only subject. The photograph offers both an overall city view and many smaller arrangements within it. Each closer look can follow another street, roofline or group of trees, while the wider layout remains visible across the frame.
