When I first laid eyes on the Larung Gar Buddhist settlement in China, it felt like stepping into a living tapestry. An entire hillside transformed into a maze of tightly stacked homes, each one built with a kind of raw determination. Seeing it in black and white strips away distraction—it leaves only form, shadow, and the sheer density of human resilience. Every line of woodwork, every window frame, every slanted rooftop whispers about lives lived close together, bound by faith and community.
What captivated me most was the rhythm of repetition. Thousands of houses, but no two are exactly the same. Each window carried its own weight of stories—monks studying, families sharing meals, quiet moments of prayer spilling into the night. Photographing this place wasn’t about capturing architecture alone; it was about holding onto a sense of scale that felt almost impossible to take in all at once. The camera framed what my eyes couldn’t—an ordered chaos of humanity clinging to a mountainside.
There’s a quiet power in photographing places like this. Modern life often feels spread out, disconnected, and fragmented, but here everything converges. It’s humbling to realize how people adapt and thrive in conditions that demand closeness and shared purpose. The black-and-white treatment lends the scene a timeless quality—almost as if these houses could belong to yesterday, today, or a hundred years from now.
