Red and White Marks Cross Uneven Layers of Old Brick
I noticed this wall while walking through Beijing, drawn to the colour and texture within an otherwise ordinary stretch of brickwork. Faded Chinese characters in red and white cross the surface, where grey, brown and ochre bricks carry patches of wear. This colour photograph turns that close street detail into the whole subject.
The upper rows are fairly regular, but the pattern changes lower down. Bricks lose their clean edges, mortar appears in broader patches, and darker staining breaks the surface into uneven areas. The painted marks follow their own paths across that grid. Some strokes remain clear; others become difficult to separate from the worn material underneath.
I made this image in 2015. What holds my attention is the meeting of structure and interruption. The brick courses provide a rhythm, while the faded writing and rough repairs pull the eye away from it. I have kept the focus on what is visible rather than giving the characters a meaning or age that the photograph cannot establish.
As wall art, it can bring an understated urban texture to a study or living room. The warm and cool tones sit together naturally, making the print suitable for someone drawn to weathered architecture, abstract surfaces or details from Chinese city streets. For me, the interest is in looking longer at something easy to pass by, until small differences in colour and wear become the centre of the scene.
