Warm Stone Walls Above Blue Water and Clouds
The lighthouse rises above the lower fortress walls, giving this Havana waterfront a clear outline. Warm light catches the stone while the water stays cooler and darker in the foreground. I was drawn to that contrast in this view of Morro Castle, where the coastal setting remains as important as the building.
The fortress has a broad, solid presence. Its walls follow the rocky edge, with rougher surfaces below and more regular masonry above. The tall lighthouse adds a narrower vertical shape, while a few smaller structures and vegetation continue along the right side. I wanted enough of the shoreline to remain visible for the architecture to feel firmly placed.
Colour keeps the scene open. Soft clouds cross a pale blue sky, and the water carries small ripples rather than a strong reflection of the whole building. Golden light across the stone gives the fortress detail without turning it into a silhouette. I find the varied surfaces particularly interesting: rock, masonry, trees and water each hold the light differently.
I photographed this evening view in Havana, Cuba, in 2017. My attention was on the relationship between the lighthouse and the longer line of walls beneath it. The photograph offers a recognizable coastal landmark, but its quieter details are equally useful: the small changes in the stone, the gentle cloud shapes and the textured water separating the viewpoint from the shore.
