A Narrow Bridge Leading into Coastal Castle Ruins
A narrow bridge crosses the dark cleft below Dunluce Castle, giving this view an immediate sense of height. Beyond it, roofless walls and empty windows stand against the open sky. I made this black and white photograph on Northern Ireland’s coast in 2019, drawn to the way the ruins occupy their rocky setting.
The bridge provides a clear route into the composition. It reaches from the right toward an entrance between two surviving walls, then the eye moves across broken gables and chimneys to the sea. The foreground cliff is deeply cut and uneven, with pale grasses catching the light along its edges. Those natural surfaces make the straight bridge rails and built stonework feel especially precise.
The sea appears calm behind the ruin. A few low clouds stretch across the horizon, leaving the upper sky largely open. I wanted that breathing room around the castle: it lets the surviving structure remain the focus while keeping the coast present as more than a backdrop.
Monochrome brings out the difference between sunlit stone and the darker openings beneath it. The empty windows are small but striking, and the exposed cliff carries enough texture to draw attention even after the overall view feels familiar.
