Illuminated Towers Within A Dark Transylvanian Hillside
Bran Castle shines against the dark trees and hills of Transylvania in this black and white night photograph. I made the image in Romania in 2011, keeping the castle within a broad view of its surroundings. Its pale walls become the centre of attention, while the wooded slopes and distant ridge provide a quieter setting.
The contrast is what gives the scene its particular mood. The tallest square tower rises clearly above the lower roofs, and smaller pointed forms create a varied outline beside it. Light catches the walls unevenly, revealing sections of the architecture while allowing other parts to remain darker. I wanted that difference to carry the atmosphere rather than brighten the whole scene.
Trees overlap the lower part of the castle, making the illuminated building feel embedded in the hillside. Below, a few rooftops appear in deeper shadow. Farther back, the ridge is softer and less distinct, so the photograph has several layers of distance without relying on a busy skyline.
I am drawn to the way a recognisable landmark can feel different when so much of its setting is subdued. Here, monochrome keeps the attention on light, shape, and scale. The castle has a strong presence, but it occupies only part of the frame; the dark landscape remains equally important to the image’s character. It offers a moody architectural view for anyone drawn to Romanian travel photography and the quiet drama of a lit building after dark.
