Warm Canyon Walls Above a Winding River Below
Warm light reaches across the canyon walls below Dead Horse Point in Utah. A river curves between the red rock formations, while a broad foreground ledge places the viewer near the overlook. This colour landscape photograph holds the rugged ground close by and the many layers of canyon stretching into the distance.
I was drawn to the way light separates the rock. Some faces glow orange, while others remain in deep shadow, making their shapes clear even within the crowded terrain. The river adds a much smoother line, drawing a route through the layered cliffs and slopes rather than following their angular edges.
The near ledge is an important part of the view. Its rough surface gives the eye something tangible before the land drops away beyond it. Farther back, ridges overlap and gradually become smaller, building depth through repeated forms. A clouded sky closes the image above without taking attention away from the canyon.
I photographed this scene in 2010, looking for an arrangement that would convey the scale of the landscape while keeping its details readable. The image changes with distance: broad areas of red and gold first, then ledges, darker gullies, and the river’s quieter surface. As a Utah landscape print, it offers a strong sense of place through colour, light, and the visible structure of the canyon.
