Flowing Sandstone Walls Around a Small Opening of Sky
A small opening of blue sky gives these sandstone walls their scale. In this colour photograph of Antelope Canyon, Arizona, I followed the curving rock upward, where warm orange surfaces meet darker red and mauve shadows. The narrow view makes the canyon feel close on every side.
The lines in the stone are what draw me in. Fine bands sweep across the lower wall, bend around its edge, and continue into the brighter rock above. I like how the larger curves and the smaller surface patterns work together. From a distance, the picture has a few strong shapes; closer up, it becomes a much more intricate study.
Light reaches each wall differently. The upper surface catches a warm glow, while the right side holds darker tones that bring out its ridges. Between them, the opening becomes a clear focal point. I left that patch of sky in the frame because it gives the eye somewhere to move after following the enclosing rock.
This Antelope Canyon print brings the American Southwest into a room through colour and form. It can appeal as a desert landscape or as a natural abstract, depending on how you look at it. I enjoy that overlap: the photograph stays rooted in a recognisable canyon, while its flowing lines make a composition that keeps revealing smaller details.
