Northern Ontario Abandoned Motel and Empty Lot Black and White Photography

Brick Arches Beneath A Weathered Roof And Bare Sign Frame

I discovered this abandoned motel while driving across Northern Ontario toward Western Canada. The weathered building beside its broad empty parking lot made me stop. I photographed it in 2021, keeping the surrounding pavement in the frame because it gave the structure a setting and showed how much open space remained around it.

The building sits on the left, with a steep gable rising above a lower roof. Brick arches frame dark openings along the front. Above them, a large empty sign frame and an old television antenna create thin, angular shapes against the sky. Those exposed outlines make a strong contrast with the heavier walls below.

Closer to the ground, the scene becomes less orderly. Plants crowd the building’s edges, with taller weeds and shrubs spreading toward the lot. Loose material and small remnants lie across the foreground. I find these details as compelling as the facade: they show the difference between the architecture’s repeated forms and the uneven growth now surrounding them.

The parking area opens to the right, with a line of trees beyond it. A generous area of clear sky gives the roof and sign frame room. Black and white separates those layers through texture and tone, from the rough vegetation to the worn pavement and darker window openings.

For me, the photograph’s appeal lies in that balance between structure and emptiness. The motel retains a recognizable roadside shape, while the vacant lot changes how it feels within the landscape. It would suit an interest in abandoned buildings, Ontario road trips or documentary photographs of weathered architecture.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
