Drangshlid Turf Houses Beneath the Cliff Black and White Photography
Two Gabled Entrances at the Foot of an Icelandic Cliff
At Drangshlid in Iceland, I stood looking at the low turf houses where they meet the steep rock face. Their scale was what first drew me into the scene: two small gabled fronts beneath a cliff that rises well beyond the top of the frame. The land opens out on the left, giving the buildings a different setting on each side. I waited for the light and sky to hold together before making the photograph.
The two dark doors are topped by small windows, and the pale fronts show horizontal layers and uneven surfaces. Grass spreads across the low roofs, with rough stone visible along the right edge. Above, the cliff is broken into ridges, fissures, and projecting ledges. The upright frame gives those textures plenty of space while keeping both entrances clear near the bottom. I liked the contrast between their simple triangular outlines and the much less regular shape of the rock immediately behind them.
Black and white draws the grass, building fronts, and cliff into one range of tones. The doors provide darker vertical marks, while the cloudy sky offers a softer area beside the dense rock texture. I made this during my time in Iceland in 2022, taking the view slowly rather than moving straight past it. The photograph rests on a close physical relationship between the structures and their surroundings. From the small windows to the high face of stone, the differences in scale remain the part of the scene I return to.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
