Saskatchewan Abandoned Schoolhouse Chair Black and White Interior Photography

Broken Furniture And Fallen Plaster Beneath Two Bright Windows

On my 2021 road trip across Canada, I often left the highways to follow rural farm roads. In Saskatchewan, a solitary wooden building standing well back from the road caught my attention. I went to investigate and found this abandoned schoolhouse. Inside, the floorboards shifted and groaned beneath my boots as I moved carefully through the room.

The battered chair became the anchor of this photograph. Its peeling backrest rises in front of the windows, while the broken seat and narrow legs remain visible among the wreckage. I am drawn to that recognizable everyday shape within an interior where so much has fallen apart. The chair gives the surrounding disorder a point of reference.

Behind it, a damaged bed frame and tangled springs stretch across the room. Loose boards angle through the scene, with cracked plaster scattered over the floor. A tall wooden cabinet remains on the right, its upper decorative edge contrasting with the broken pieces below. Exposed lath and worn window frames add still more layers of texture.

The two windows admit bright light, leaving the outside view almost featureless. Within the room, that light reveals rough surfaces and separates the chair from the darker objects behind it. I chose black and white to bring the different materials together through tone while preserving their individual detail.

What stays with me is the closeness of these ordinary remnants. The room holds recognizable furniture, yet its arrangement has been transformed by decay. This vertical photograph offers a detailed view of a forgotten Saskatchewan interior, with the chair and windows giving a quiet structure to the broken surfaces around them.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
