A Small Pale House Below Fog Softened Hills
The little house seems almost lost within the slope behind it. I came across this weathered farmhouse while travelling through Iceland’s countryside and photographed it in 2022, with mist gathering along the upper hills and a river crossing the foreground. The colour image holds the pale building within a broad landscape of muted green, ochre, and dark earth.
I remember the cold air and the wind moving through the valley. What stayed with me was the landscape’s quiet steadiness. The house has a clear shape, with its pitched roof and light walls, but it occupies only a small part of the photograph. The surrounding land remains the larger presence.
Low ridges and irregular channels create subtle lines across the hillside. A few slender power poles are visible, and the river makes a brighter band near the bottom of the frame. These details provide a route through the view without turning it into a busy scene. The fog above softens the farthest slopes, letting the more defined foreground hold the eye.
I wanted the composition to preserve that difference in scale. The building gives the landscape a human reference, while the valley’s textures continue well beyond it. The restrained palette makes the photograph feel quiet without losing its detail. For someone drawn to Icelandic landscapes and isolated rural architecture, it offers a view where a small abandoned home and a much wider stretch of land remain closely connected.
