British Columbia Abandoned Timber Building Black and White Coastal Photography

Rows Of Empty Windows Above Fallen Wooden Beams

This abandoned timber building stands against the forest on British Columbia’s coast. I photographed it in 2011, drawn to the contrast between its repeating windows and the broken structure around them. The long facade still has a clear order, even where the roof and adjoining sections have begun to fall apart.

Three levels of windows run across the main building. Dark openings punctuate pale walls, and horizontal bands divide one floor from the next. The upper roof remains largely in place toward the right, with an uneven covering across its slope. At the left, exposed rafters and open wall sections reveal a much more fragile outline.

I find that shift from regular architecture to scattered timber especially compelling. Fallen beams cross the rough foreground, with angled boards and smaller pieces lying among rocks and vegetation. A small tree grows close to the right side of the facade, and low plants spread across the slope below it. The surrounding growth has a softer, less predictable pattern than the rows of windows.

Mist lightens the forest in the upper left, while darker trees behind the roof keep the building distinct. Black and white brings these layers together through tone and texture: weathered walls, splintered wood, foliage and rock. The photograph holds on what remains visible rather than supplying a history for the structure. For anyone interested in abandoned architecture, its combination of a substantial facade and a disordered foreground offers a detailed coastal scene to spend time with.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
