Vancouver Night Skyline and Marina Black and White Photography
Lit Windows and Sailboat Masts Reflected Across Still Harbour Water
Vancouver’s illuminated buildings form a dense band above the marina in this black and white night photograph from Stanley Park. Below them, still water stretches the lights into an uneven reflection. I photographed the waterfront during a calm night in 2021, interested in how the skyline and the boats could share the same view.
The upper floors create a close grid of lit and dark windows, with several taller buildings rising above the surrounding rooftops. In front, sailboat masts cut finer lines through that pattern. Hulls, cabins, and mooring lines occupy the narrow strip between the city and its reflected lights. Toward the bottom of the frame, the water becomes darker, leaving room around the brightest reflections and making their length easier to see.
From the edge of Stanley Park, I could watch the city across the harbour while remaining within the quieter space beside the water. I stayed with the composition long enough to let those different parts settle together. The boats helped connect the large scale of the buildings with smaller forms in the foreground, and the water softened the rigid window patterns without removing them. In monochrome, the lights become points and lines that can be followed through both halves of the picture. For me, the photograph holds the feeling of observing a busy waterfront from a little distance, with its activity visible in the buildings and its stillness gathered in the marina below.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
