Abandoned British Columbia Boathouse Photography in Coastal Mist
Weathered Waterfront Buildings and a Moored Boat Below Forest
Mist softens the forest behind these weathered waterfront buildings in British Columbia. I photographed the abandoned boathouse with its exposed timbers and dark openings facing the water, keeping a moored cabin boat and floating dock in the foreground. The monochrome view holds the rough detail of the structures against a much less definite backdrop of trees.
The large gabled building gives the scene its centre. Rows of small openings remain visible along its side, while missing sections at the front reveal the framework beneath the roof. To the left, a smaller structure leans into a more broken shape. I am drawn to the differences between them: one still has a strong outline, while the other shows its damage more openly.
Timber piles, dock edges and the boat create another layer close to the water. Their reflections are interrupted by small ripples, carrying the buildings’ vertical lines into softer patterns below. The forest rises behind the roofs, but fog reduces its detail as it recedes. That change from sharp wood to indistinct trees is an important part of the photograph’s mood.
I wanted to keep the place as a waterfront scene, with ordinary objects still visible around the deteriorating buildings. For someone drawn to coastal history or weathered architecture, the print offers many surfaces to explore. What stays with me is the contrast between the open framework of the boathouse and the enclosing forest, with the water giving both a quieter, shifting reflection.
