Leaning Pylons And Fine Cables Across A Calm River
The leaning pylons of Derry’s Peace Bridge create a striking pair of shapes above the river. I liked how their pale surfaces stand apart from the finer cables, which descend in loose curves towards the deck. The bridge has a clear architectural presence, yet the water and clouded sky give the structure enough space to feel light.
Seen from the side, the deck makes a long line across the photograph, linking the more emphatic forms of the pylons. Their bases sit close to the water, with small reflections appearing beneath them. Behind the bridge, low buildings and trees form a quieter city backdrop, and a distant spire rises just above that line.
The cables are especially rewarding to follow. They give the eye a route from the higher pylon to the lower deck, then back towards the other support. I find that movement more interesting than a purely symmetrical view. The two leaning forms create balance through their relationship rather than through identical positions.
I photographed the bridge in 2019 and chose black and white to emphasise its geometry against the softer clouds. Small changes in the sky and river remain visible, keeping the scene from feeling like an isolated architectural drawing. For someone who enjoys modern bridges or Northern Irish city photography, this print offers a distinctive Derry subject with clean lines and a measured waterside mood. It suits a study, office or living room where architectural detail can hold attention.
