A Quiet Gaze Inside An Indian Shop
This black-and-white portrait holds a quiet moment inside a small shop in India. An older woman sits close to the doorway, one arm lifted as her hand rests against the edge of her headscarf. She looks directly toward me, calm and watchful, while the dim wooden interior falls softly behind her. The photograph belongs naturally within my India wall art collection, where human presence and place carry equal weight.
I made this photograph on location in India during a day spent moving through local streets and small businesses. Nothing in the moment felt arranged. Her posture was relaxed, her hand remained near her scarf, and her expression held the kind of directness that disappears when someone becomes overly conscious of being photographed. That unguarded quality is what gave me the photograph.
The composition is built around three elements: her eyes, the raised hand, and the broad diagonal of her forearm. The eye contact establishes the connection first. From there, the hand and scarf bring texture and gesture into the frame, while the floral clothing fills the lower portion with repeated pattern. Dark wood on the right and softened shapes on the left create a modest sense of environment without pulling attention away from her face.
Black and white strips the scene back to tone, line, and expression. It emphasizes the weathered texture of her skin, the fine pattern of the scarf, and the contrast between her face and the shadowed shop. The image also sits comfortably within my black and white street photography, although its intimacy makes it feel closer to a personal encounter than a passing street scene.
What I value most is her composure. She does not smile for approval, and she does not look away. There is dignity in the way she meets the viewer, yet the portrait never feels formal. That balance gives the photograph lasting strength. It can hold a room from a distance through the prominent face and strong tonal design, then reward closer viewing through the eyes, hand, fabric, and small details of the setting.
This photograph is well suited to interiors that benefit from human warmth, monochrome restraint, and a sense of lived experience. It would work especially well in a study, library, hallway, or quiet living space, where the direct gaze can become part of the room rather than simply decorate it.
Each limited-edition print is made with archival pigment inks on archival paper. I personally sign every print, and each one includes a certificate of authenticity. The edition is limited to ten, preserving the rarity and personal character of the work.

This photograph is released as a signed and numbered limited edition of only 10 prints in total across all available sizes combined—not 10 prints in each size.
Every size is drawn from the same edition. Whether the photograph is purchased as a small print or at the largest available size, it uses one of the 10 edition numbers.
I personally sign and number each print on the reverse, and every print is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity recording its title, dimensions, medium, edition number, and date of issue.
Once all 10 prints have been sold, the edition will be permanently closed. No additional numbered editions of the photograph will be produced in another size or format.

I personally produce every photograph using archival pigment inks on premium archival paper with a subtle luster finish.
The paper provides rich tonal depth, excellent fine-detail reproduction, and a refined surface that reduces distracting glare under normal indoor lighting. It is especially well suited to both color and black-and-white photography.
Each photograph is sold as an unframed fine art print, allowing it to be framed according to the collector’s space and personal style.
Before a print leaves my studio, I carefully inspect it for color, tonal accuracy, surface quality, and overall presentation. Nothing is outsourced, and every finished print passes through my hands.

Worldwide delivery is included in the listed price, so there is no additional shipping charge added during checkout. I select an appropriate tracked delivery service based on the destination, print size, and current shipping requirements.
Delivery times vary by destination and may be affected by customs processing or circumstances beyond my control.
Because I also travel extensively to create new photographic work, studio dispatch may occasionally be delayed while I am away. When that happens, the print will be produced and shipped as soon as I return to the studio.
