A Drumstick and Resting Hand Across Bright Drumheads

The hands and instruments carry this close view of a musician in Havana. I photographed the percussion setup with the player’s torso at the top of the frame and three rounded drumheads below. One hand rests across a bright drum surface; the other holds a stick angled toward the metal percussion pieces at the left. Those positions give the image its sense of an active musical moment.

The circular drumheads establish a strong pattern across the lower part of the photograph. They differ in size, angle and texture, from the smooth pale surface beneath the hand to the more marked skin in the foreground. I like how the diagonal stick cuts across their curves. Fine details in the fingers, rims and shirt add interest without disturbing the clear arrangement of hands and instruments.

The black and white treatment concentrates the light on those forms. The background falls into darkness, while the brighter skins and edges separate the drums from one another. My close framing brings the physical details of playing into view: the reach of an arm, the grip on a stick and the contact between palm and drum.

For a music room, a drummer or someone drawn to Havana photography, this piece offers an intimate musical subject. Its appeal lies in the visible gestures and strong shapes, with the dark surroundings giving the small arrangement of hands and drumheads a focused presence on a wall.
