St Marys Paper Mill Sault Ste Marie Black and White Architectural Photography
Stone Towers and Arched Windows Seen Above Open Ground
Tall stone sections rise above the lower buildings of the former St Marys Paper mill in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. The elevated view shows how the different parts fit together, from the broad front wall to the taller pulp tower behind it. I photographed the site in 2021. Its substantial masonry and repeated arched openings give the industrial architecture a strong character, even within the open ground that now surrounds it.
The nearest wall stretches across the lower left, with windows set beneath a sequence of stone arches. Above them, the flat roof has a clear edge, while taller sections introduce additional rows of openings at different levels. I like being able to follow those changes in height through the composition. The tower at the right has long paired arches that make its vertical form especially prominent, balancing the more horizontal frontage beside it.
A pale path runs toward a dark opening at the tower’s base. Grasses and low growth occupy the surrounding land, while distant buildings and trees provide a wider city setting. Small clouds scatter across the sky, leaving the stonework as the main source of detail. Black and white brings out the masonry’s rough texture and the contrast between dark windows and lighter wall surfaces. As a print, this photograph offers a detailed view of Sault Ste Marie’s industrial architecture, suited to an interest in historic mills, substantial stone buildings and Ontario places shaped by working industry.
