A Guarded Smile Beneath Windblown Silver Hair
I made this black and white portrait while traveling through southern India, where the streets often revealed their character in brief, unplanned encounters. The woman stood before a corrugated metal shutter, leaning lightly against a walking stick while a bicycle rested beside her. The scene belongs naturally within my black and white street photography, but the photograph is ultimately carried by her expression rather than the setting.
Her eyes meet mine directly, yet the raised hand partly covering her mouth introduces uncertainty. She may be amused, cautious, curious, or all three at once. A loose strand of silver hair crosses her face, catching the light and adding movement to an otherwise still moment. Her weathered hands, patterned shawl, simple clothing, bracelet, and walking stick reveal years of use without turning the portrait into a catalogue of hardship. What holds me is her individuality.
I photographed her on location as the encounter unfolded. Nothing in the gesture feels arranged. The slight tilt of her head and the restrained smile appeared for only a moment, giving the portrait its emotional tension.
The horizontal lines of the shutter create a strong visual rhythm behind her. They contrast with the vertical walking stick and the upright figure, while the bicycle adds a quiet reference to daily life. These elements give the image a clear sense of place without overwhelming the face. Within my broader India wall art, this photograph stands apart because it is intimate rather than scenic. It speaks through expression, texture, and presence.
Black and white removes the distraction of local color and concentrates attention on the eyes, skin, hair, fabric, and gesture. The tonal range moves from luminous silver hair to deep folds in the clothing, creating enough contrast to hold attention across a room while preserving detail for closer viewing. The portrait feels timeless, but not detached from reality. It remains grounded in a specific person, a particular street, and a fleeting exchange between us.
I see this photograph working especially well in a study, reading room, hallway, office, or contemporary living space. Its neutral palette suits both restrained and eclectic interiors. It will appeal most strongly to collectors drawn to humanist photography, expressive faces, travel, culture, and photographs that reveal character without explaining everything.
Each limited edition print is produced with archival pigment inks on Premium archival paper. I personally sign every print, and each one includes a certificate of authenticity. The edition is limited to ten, preserving the rarity and personal nature of the work.

This photograph is released as a signed and numbered limited edition of only 10 prints in total across all available sizes combined—not 10 prints in each size.
Every size is drawn from the same edition. Whether the photograph is purchased as a small print or at the largest available size, it uses one of the 10 edition numbers.
I personally sign and number each print on the reverse, and every print is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity recording its title, dimensions, medium, edition number, and date of issue.
Once all 10 prints have been sold, the edition will be permanently closed. No additional numbered editions of the photograph will be produced in another size or format.

I personally produce every photograph using archival pigment inks on premium archival paper with a subtle luster finish.
The paper provides rich tonal depth, excellent fine-detail reproduction, and a refined surface that reduces distracting glare under normal indoor lighting. It is especially well suited to both color and black-and-white photography.
Each photograph is sold as an unframed fine art print, allowing it to be framed according to the collector’s space and personal style.
Before a print leaves my studio, I carefully inspect it for color, tonal accuracy, surface quality, and overall presentation. Nothing is outsourced, and every finished print passes through my hands.

Worldwide delivery is included in the listed price, so there is no additional shipping charge added during checkout. I select an appropriate tracked delivery service based on the destination, print size, and current shipping requirements.
Delivery times vary by destination and may be affected by customs processing or circumstances beyond my control.
Because I also travel extensively to create new photographic work, studio dispatch may occasionally be delayed while I am away. When that happens, the print will be produced and shipped as soon as I return to the studio.
