St Mark’s Square Venice at Night Black and White Print
Passing Figures Beneath the Illuminated Venetian Arcades
Rows of lights outline St Mark’s Square in this black and white night photograph of Venice. The surrounding arcades hold the scene on three sides, while the paving opens towards the viewer in the foreground. I was interested in the contrast between the buildings’ clear, repeating forms and the softer traces of people passing through the square.
A small group near the left appears blurred, their movement registering as overlapping shapes rather than distinct portraits. Other figures stand farther away, giving a sense of scale to the broad space. Their presence keeps the photograph connected to the life of the square, even as the architecture establishes its quiet order.
The lights repeat across the facades, separating individual arches and windows from the darkness above. At ground level, the paving lines draw the eye inward towards the far building. I kept a generous area of that foreground because it lets the viewer feel the distance between the nearest figures and the illuminated backdrop.
For me, Venice at night is compelling in moments like this: an open public space, familiar architecture, and people who are only briefly part of the frame. The monochrome treatment brings those elements together through tone and rhythm. As a print, the photograph offers both a memory of St Mark’s Square and a study of movement within a settled architectural setting. It has detail to explore without losing the spacious feeling of the evening view.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
