Flying Birds And Their Shadows Before A Sunlit Arcade
Pigeons lift across the foreground of this Plaza Vieja photograph, with their shadows scattered over the paving below. I liked the way the birds interrupt the regular architecture behind them. The arcade gives the scene a clear, steady pattern, while the wings and shadows create a much looser arrangement that could exist only for a moment.
Some of the birds are sharper, others blur as they pass through the frame. That difference makes the movement visible without hiding the main shapes of the scene. Below them, dark shadows stretch across the bright square, adding another set of bird-like forms that draws the eye towards the foreground.
Behind the flock, pale columns and rounded arches frame darker doorways. Above, shuttered windows and a long balcony repeat a finer rhythm across the facade. Cafe chairs along the edge of the square give the view a familiar everyday detail, sitting between the strong architecture and the moving birds.
Black and white makes the sunlight especially clear. The bright masonry, deep openings and sharp ground shadows work together, with the pigeons adding energy across the middle.
I photographed this scene in Havana in 2017. It offers a Cuban street image built around an immediate event within an architectural setting. For someone who enjoys candid travel photography or city scenes with movement, it makes an engaging print for a living room, study or cafe. There is plenty to examine after the first impression of flight, from the birds’ changing positions to the repeated lines of the arcade.
