Patterned Feathers and a Dark Head Above Rippling Water

The red eye is the smallest strong colour accent in this close photograph of a common loon on an Ontario lake. I photographed the bird with its head turned to the left, bringing the long bill, rounded head and marked neck into clear view. Much of its body remains visible as well, with the back extending towards the right edge of the frame.

The feather patterns give the portrait another point of interest. Pale vertical marks cross the side of the neck, while repeated white shapes cover the darker back. Finer lines appear on the chest, changing the scale of the pattern from one part of the bird to another. I find that those details hold attention after the eye and bill have been noticed. Small droplets on the head and bill add to the close view without becoming a separate subject.

The surrounding water is blue and green, with ripples near the body and a softer surface farther behind it. That background keeps the bird connected to the lake while allowing the head to remain distinct. My photograph uses colour for the eye and water, but much of the loon’s visible character comes from its dark and pale feathers. The close framing brings those different elements together in a wildlife portrait centred on the bird’s appearance and its place at the water’s surface.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
