One Small Figure Below Snowy Slopes and Dark Rock Pinnacles

I came across this chinstrap penguin during one of my early landings in Antarctica. The photograph, made in 2010, holds the bird within a much larger setting of snow, rock and cloud. Its upright figure appears low on the left, with open snow stretching away beside it. I remember the encounter for that simple relationship between a small animal and the space around it.

Dark rock pinnacles rise behind the penguin, forming a broken line across the snowy slope. Above them, the textured sky occupies a large part of the frame. I like how those different layers remain distinct: rough snow in the foreground, the clear outline of the bird, distant rock and soft cloud. Each adds something to the scene without taking attention completely away from the penguin.

I chose black and white because the landscape already felt close to monochrome. The bird’s dark back and pale chest stand out naturally, while the snow retains subtle variations in tone. The treatment brings the rock shapes and the animal into the same visual language, keeping the composition spare but detailed.

For me, this is wildlife photography where the environment matters as much as the subject. The penguin gives the view a point of connection, and the wider landscape gives it scale. On a wall, I see the image offering both a recognisable Antarctic bird and an open, quiet arrangement of snow and sky. The small figure remains the detail I return to, surrounded by all that pale space.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
