Forbidden City Outer Wall And Moat Black And White Photography
A Long Palace Wall Reflected Beside A Line Of Trees
The wall and its reflection form a long, tapering shape beside the Forbidden City in Beijing. I was drawn to the way the water repeats the masonry and the line of trees, extending their forms into the lower half of the photograph. The scene has a clear direction, with the nearer wall leading towards a much smaller building in the distance.
At the left, the masonry is large enough to show its weathered texture and layered edges. Farther along, fine branches and drooping tree shapes take over from that solid surface. Their reflections become darker, less precise marks in the moat, giving the water its own version of the scene above.
The pale sky and the relatively smooth water provide generous quiet areas around those details. Small ripples soften the reflected trees without breaking the overall line. I like how the composition contains both a strong architectural edge and a more delicate natural pattern, with neither needing to dominate the other.
I photographed this view in 2015 and presented it in black and white to bring the wall, trees and water into a restrained range of tones. The image concentrates on the palace’s outer setting, where a long view and a simple reflection create a measured mood. For someone who enjoys Chinese architecture or calm waterside photography, it offers a Beijing print with depth, subtle texture and enough open space to feel settled on a wall.
