Alpaca Sculpture in Beijing Shop Window Black and White Photography
An Alpaca Sculpture Among Graphic Shirts and Layered Window Reflections
An alpaca sculpture stands at the centre of a crowded Beijing shop window in this black and white street photograph. I came across it while walking through a traditional retail street during an extended stay in the city. Its long neck and exaggerated face immediately drew my attention amid the graphic shirts, masks, and signs around it.
The sculpture has a rough surface that catches the display lighting in small patches. Mannequins occupy either side, with another shirt hanging higher at the left. Below, patterned floor tiles repeat across the window’s base. Large characters and a number hang beneath the wooden beams overhead. Reflections of the street’s tiled architecture cross the glass, layering the surroundings over the display and adding more lines to an already dense arrangement.
I photographed this view in 2015, during time spent exploring Beijing on foot and noticing the personality of its everyday shops. Here, the humour of the central figure worked alongside the more orderly patterns of the tiles, glass divisions, and beams. I kept those elements together so the photograph would retain the window’s particular setting as well as its unusual subject. Monochrome helps separate the pale shirts and sculpture from the darker interior without removing the reflected street. For me, the image holds the surprise of that encounter: an ordinary storefront where one improbable figure gives the entire display a distinctive character.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
