Four Seated Figures Beside a Brick Wall and Open Doors
I watched this small gathering outside a neighbourhood restaurant in Beijing and waited for the scene to settle naturally. Four older people sit along the brick wall, three sharing a bench and one on a stool beside the entrance. I photographed them in black and white, keeping their gestures and the ordinary street setting together.
The two figures near the middle turn toward one another, giving the group a clear point of interaction. At the left, a seated figure leans forward beside a cane; at the right, the person on the stool sits close to the open glass doors. A tree divides part of the wall behind them, and the pavement stretches across the foreground. Those surrounding details help place the people within the space where I found them.
What held my attention was the loose arrangement of the group. Their different postures create a rhythm along the bench and doorway without needing anyone to face the camera. The brickwork gives the background a steady pattern, while coats, hands, and expressions provide smaller changes within it. Soft light allows those details to remain visible across the whole frame. I wanted the photograph to hold the conversation and the pause around it, preserving a brief view of everyday Beijing beyond its better-known monuments. The people remain its centre, with the restaurant and street giving that moment its setting.
