Dark Wooden Walls Against a Snow-Covered Field
Snow falls around a wooden barn in an open Ontario field, with pale trees forming a detailed backdrop behind it. I photographed the winter landscape in black and white, keeping the dark siding as the strongest shape within the scene. The smooth white roof and broad foreground field soften the building’s outline, while the falling flakes add a finer layer across the view.
I made the image while standing out in the snow and watching the weather settle over the countryside. I waited until the flakes were thick enough to remain visible against the barn and trees. From this angle, the building sits slightly to the right, leaving the woodland to extend across the frame. I included a generous area of snow in front because its simple surface gives the eye a quiet approach before reaching the more intricate siding and branches. The grey sky keeps the light soft rather than casting strong shadows across the field.
What interests me is the balance between the barn’s firm geometry and the less definite shapes around it. The roof makes a clean diagonal, the wooden boards hold their own texture, and the snow-covered trees break into many fine lines behind them. Monochrome brings those elements together while keeping the structure distinct. For someone drawn to Ontario landscapes or quiet winter photography, this image offers a particular moment during snowfall rather than only a snow-covered view. I wanted to preserve the way the weather changed the scene around the barn, leaving its dark walls clearly visible within an increasingly pale landscape.
