Broken Roof Beams Beneath a Broad Prairie Sky
A collapsing barn stands beneath a broad sky in rural Manitoba, its broken roof and leaning walls exposed above the surrounding grass. I photographed the scene in black and white, bringing out the rough shingles, separated boards, and deep openings in the structure. The clouds occupy much of the square frame, giving the damaged building room within its prairie setting.
I made this image while exploring rural Manitoba as part of my ongoing documentation of abandoned farms across Canada. Years of driving gravel roads have made me attentive to structures like this, where a familiar building shape remains even as its lines begin to fail. Here, the higher roof at the left contrasts with the collapsed section toward the front and right. I chose an angle that kept those differences visible, including the fence and thin trees beyond the barn so its surroundings would remain part of the photograph.
The textures give the scene its detail. Broad boards bend away from the wall, roof pieces overlap at irregular angles, and fine grasses fill the ground below. Monochrome separates those surfaces while keeping the larger building easy to read. I like how the strong light reveals the damaged framework without losing the quieter shapes of the clouds above. For someone drawn to abandoned places or rural Canadian photography, this image offers a direct record of a Manitoba barn at a particular stage of its deterioration. The photograph preserves what I found along the backroads: a structure still recognizable, with its changing shape clearly visible against the open sky.
