Weathered Farm Buildings Near Hedley Black and White Photography
Two Wooden Structures and Machinery Beneath a Broad Clouded Sky
Two weathered farm buildings drew me off the road near Hedley, British Columbia, during my rural travels in 2021. As I approached, I noticed the uneven boards and the dark gaps where windows and panels no longer held a clear outline. A piece of farm machinery sat between the structures, bringing their separate forms together in the composition. I wanted to keep all three within the open landscape rather than making a close study of just one wall.
The taller building on the left has a steep gable and a long side that recedes toward the machinery. Beside it, the lower structure presents a broad wall beneath a shingled roof. Their boards run mostly horizontally, but broken window pieces and loose panels interrupt those lines. Grass fills the foreground and rises into the open field on the right. Fence posts remain visible to the left, with scattered trees further back. Above the buildings, clouds occupy a large part of the frame and give the low structures a sense of scale.
Black and white separates the pale grass from the darker wood while keeping detail in the roof shingles and clouds. I liked how the regular roof shapes remained clear despite the less orderly surfaces below them. The picture came from stopping and looking during a drive through rural British Columbia, then taking time with the position of the buildings in the frame. Its interest lies in what remains visible: weathered timber, damaged openings, machinery, and a wide sky over the field.
