Old Barcelona Motorcycle Black and White Street Photography
A Worn Headlight and Spoked Wheel in Close View
Someone had still taken the trouble to lock it up. That detail stayed with me when I found this worn motorcycle on a Barcelona pavement in 2005. The bike looked battered, with a damaged headlight, a scratched tank, and a seat in poor condition, yet it was still part of everyday street life.
I kept the composition tight on the front of the motorcycle, letting the rear and the street behind it fall out of focus. In black and white, the fork and front wheel become the strongest shapes. The round headlight sits high in the frame, while the wheel’s fine spokes spread across the lower corner. Between them, the tank and engine slip into softer shadow.
The midday light was harsh, which suited the worn surfaces. Bright edges on the metal sit against deep blacks, making the mechanical details clear without turning the photograph into a complete inventory of the bike. The blur behind it also matters: the setting remains a street, but it does not compete with the motorcycle.
What interested me was the coexistence of wear and continued use. I could see the condition of the bike and the fact that it was secured, but not the owner’s story. The photograph leaves that space open. It is a close encounter with an ordinary object in Spain, made distinctive by its damaged surfaces, its strong circular forms, and the care someone had taken to keep it.
