Tall Masts and Harbour Lights Reflected in Smooth Water
I have returned to this Barcelona marina many times, but the early light gives it a particular quiet. In this photograph from 2005, yachts at One Ocean Port Vell sit beneath a pale blue-grey sky, with their lights and masts extending downward as reflections. The water occupies enough of the frame to become part of the subject.
The vessels form a compact band across the harbour. A large motor yacht anchors the left side, while taller sailing masts rise nearer the centre and right. Buildings and cranes remain behind them, keeping the boats connected to the city. The sky above is largely open, so the fine rigging stays distinct without a busy background.
What held my attention was the balance of light and stillness. Small lamps along the vessels and waterfront become long white marks in the water. The darker mast reflections reach farther down, while a warm-toned building at the right adds a small change of colour to the otherwise restrained scene. Those reflected lines give the lower part of the photograph its structure.
Making a view like this means watching for the brief point when the light and the water work together. I wanted to keep the quiet of the marina visible alongside the scale of the yachts. It is a nautical photograph with a clear urban setting, but the broad sky and smooth water leave room around the detail. The result holds a calm early-morning view of Barcelona’s waterfront.
