Angular Faces and Carved Drapery Give Stone a Human Presence

The carved figures around the table caught my attention through their shapes. Faces are reduced to strong planes, eyes become narrow lines, and the drapery below them falls into deep, sweeping grooves. This black and white photograph shows a detail of the Last Supper sculpture at La Sagrada Família in Barcelona, Spain. I was drawn to how much expression could emerge from such restrained forms.

The nearest figure occupies the right side, seen largely from behind. Beyond it, the faces around the table appear at different angles, with dark gaps separating their pale surfaces. That arrangement gives the photograph a sense of looking into the gathering rather than standing apart from it. The rough block wall remains visible behind the figures, and the angled stone overhead adds another shape to the scene.

I made this photograph in 2005. In monochrome, the sculpture’s textures become especially clear: small marks across the stone, sharp edges around a face, and smoother curves in the folds of the cloth. I like the contrast between those textures. The carved table covering brings a flowing rhythm beneath the more severe shapes of the heads and shoulders.

As wall art, this image may suit a study, a space for reflection or a room with an interest in religious art and sculpture. It can also speak to someone who remembers visiting Barcelona and noticing the details of La Sagrada Família. For me, it offers a close view of craftsmanship, where a few deliberate lines give the stone its character and keep the figures distinct.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
