A Narrow Stone Lane Lit by Starburst Streetlights
The woman beside the large door is the detail I return to in this Barcelona photograph. Her bag rests on the ground as she stands close to the entrance, while the narrow lane continues behind her. I like that this small everyday moment sits within such a strong architectural setting, with high walls and a long stretch of uneven paving.
I photographed the lane at night in the Gothic Quarter. The streetlights form bright starbursts down its length, drawing the eye past the woman and towards the distance. Above them, balconies and a large hanging lamp project into the space between the buildings. The view feels close on both sides, but the receding pavement gives it considerable depth.
Black and white brings out the worn surfaces. Pale plaster on the right is cracked and patchy, while the doorway on the left stays much darker. The paving catches enough light for its irregular pattern to remain visible across the foreground. I find the contrast between those rough textures and the bright lamps especially effective. The woman’s slight blur adds a different quality: a brief human presence within the much firmer lines of the lane. My photograph keeps both together, making the architecture the setting for a moment rather than removing the person from the view.
