Hay Bale Scarecrow With Pumpkins Black and White Autumn Wall Art
A Grinning Farm Display Beneath Billowing Ontario Clouds
A huge grin was the first thing I noticed about this hay-bale figure on an Ontario farm. Its round head, bucket hat and curved arms turn an ordinary stack of bales into a cheerful character. I photographed the autumn display in black and white, with pumpkins arranged around its feet and a pitchfork standing alongside.
The details reward a closer look. Dark shapes make the eyes, a broad curve forms the smile, and two star-like decorations sit down the front of the body. The bales themselves keep their coarse, tightly wound texture. I like how those familiar farm materials remain recognizable even while they become something quite different.
There is plenty of open space around the figure, but it fills most of the frame. A row of trees runs back along the right, and large clouds rise behind the head. That setting makes the display feel firmly part of the countryside rather than an isolated prop. The pumpkins are small by comparison, giving a useful sense of just how oversized the character is.
I have a soft spot for this kind of playful seasonal invention. What held my attention here was the combination of simple materials and a face that reads immediately. Without the usual autumn colours, the photograph lets the smile, straw texture and rounded pumpkins carry the mood. It is a light-hearted rural scene, with enough small details to keep me looking long after that first grin.
