November Walkers Beneath Gdansk’s Ornate Town Hall Tower
A broad cobblestone street leads toward Gdansk’s ornate town hall tower in this black and white photograph. I made the image during a November walk through the Polish city, with tall façades lining both sides and scattered pedestrians crossing the open space. The overcast sky gives the architectural details a soft, even setting.
The viewpoint is deliberately spacious. Cobblestones fill the foreground, allowing the building lines and street lamps to guide the eye toward the tower. People appear at different distances, from figures close to the edges to small groups farther along. Their presence gives the scene a sense of daily movement without obscuring the street itself.
I was interested in how the two rows of façades work together. The left side carries ornate rooflines and denser decorative details; the right presents a lighter rhythm of windows and doorways. Bare branches and café structures add another layer closer to street level. The tower rises above those smaller forms as a clear destination within the composition.
This photograph holds both the scale of the city’s architecture and the ease of walking through it. Monochrome keeps the paving, façades, and figures connected through grey tones rather than competing colors. For a room with a travel or architectural focus, it brings a broad European street view with enough small details to explore beyond the landmark at its center.
