Flared Trunks and Pale Moss Reflect in Quiet Water
Orange foliage sits among long strands of pale moss in this late-autumn cypress forest photograph. Tall trunks rise from quiet water, their broad bases reflected in the lower part of the frame. The colour is soft rather than brilliant, with copper, grey, and muted brown working together across the grove.
I photographed the scene after many leaves had dropped, when the trees’ spacing and branch structure were easier to see. Their rhythm drew me in. Each trunk has its own shape, but together they create a repeated pattern that carries the eye across the water and into the forest.
The hanging moss gives that structure a finer layer. It falls between the limbs in long, light strands, partly covering the trees behind. I like how the orange foliage interrupts those pale lines, adding small warm bands across the darker trunks.
The water offers a quieter version of the woodland above it. Reflections extend downward without becoming an exact mirror, and thin marks on the surface cross the vertical tree shapes. That slight change helps the lower part of the photograph feel separate while remaining connected to the grove.
There is no single tree that needs to carry the whole image. The forest itself is the subject: flared bases, upright trunks, low autumn colour, and moss gathered between them. Its appeal is in the balance of those repeated forms and the small differences that make each one distinct.
