Pale Curves Beneath A Cool Blue Grey Sky
The sand is so pale here that the shadows become the landscape's strongest marks. I photographed these dunes in Western Australia, where low ridges cross the open foreground and a larger rounded dune rises on the right. The colour is restrained: almost white sand, cool grey shade, and a blue grey sky above a thin line of scrub.
I like the way the shapes overlap without becoming sharply defined. One shallow slope meets another, and the darker bands help me follow those changes in height. The broad foreground has enough fine surface detail to remain sand rather than an empty white field, even where the forms seem close to abstraction.
Along the distant ridge, scattered vegetation provides a different texture and a useful sense of scale. Its small dark shapes interrupt the smoother dunes, while the sky gives the whole scene a cool upper boundary. I kept that horizon low enough to show the open space, but the photograph is still carried mainly by the land.
There is no single feature that demands all the attention. Instead, my eye travels across the curves, pauses at the higher dune, and returns through the foreground shadow. That gradual movement is what I enjoy about this Australian landscape. The white sand gives the photograph a spare appearance, while the subtle changes in light keep it from feeling still or uniform.
