Illuminated Towers Rise Beyond a Dark Waterfront Treeline
Bright windows and lit edges pick out Sydney’s skyline above the harbour, with their reflections stretching into the water below. I photographed this view in 2016, drawn to the relationship between the dense group of buildings and the open spaces around them. A dark band of trees separates the city from the water, giving the illuminated towers a clear base within the frame.
I like how each building contributes a different shape. Narrow spires, stepped tops and broad rectangular faces create a varied outline across the sky. The tallest structures gather near the centre, while smaller buildings extend towards either edge. Their window patterns add fine detail within those larger forms.
The water carries a softer version of the skyline. Bright vertical reflections lose the precise edges of the buildings, becoming long bands of light among darker areas. That change gives the lower part of the image a calmer rhythm, balancing the close detail above.
Black and white makes the scene a study of light, scale and repeated shapes. For me, the photograph holds the city’s presence at night while allowing the harbour to remain an essential part of the view. As a print, it offers a detailed Australian skyline with a restrained tonal range and a clear composition, suited to a wall display with an interest in Sydney, waterfront cities and the quieter visual character of illuminated architecture.
