Pale Branches Spread Across Bare Ground Near Hyden
A blue sky stretches over a landscape almost emptied of leaves. Near Hyden in Western Australia, I photographed these dead trees rising from pale ground, with broken branches scattered around their bases. The color contrast is immediate, but the nearest tree’s complicated outline is what gives the view its center.
Its limbs fork in several directions, some reaching upward and others angling out across the lower frame. Fallen wood spreads beneath it, repeating those forms closer to the ground. Beyond, a thinner field of bare trunks continues toward the low horizon. That change of scale makes the scene feel extensive while keeping the foreground tree easy to follow.
I retained a large area of sky because the branches need that clear background. Fine streaks of cloud soften the blue without hiding the outline of the tallest limbs. The ground carries quieter colors—pale sand, gray wood, and small darker patches of low growth—so the strongest separation remains between land and sky.
The photograph does not need a dramatic event within the frame. Its tension comes from the combination of open space and tangled forms, bright sky and lifeless trees. I find that the longer I look, the more the foreground changes from a recognizable tree into a drawing of intersecting lines. Then the distant trunks bring it back to a particular place: a stark piece of Western Australian landscape, recorded as it stood before me.
