A Roadside Encounter On The Journey Toward Larung Gar

On our way toward Larung Gar, we stopped the van along a remote mountain road in northern China and met a family by chance. We had no arranged visit or portrait session; we saw people beside the road, stopped, and began talking. This black and white portrait brings me back to that encounter and to the woman whose face immediately held my attention.

Her braided hair circles her head, making a strong frame for her features. Large earrings hang beside her cheeks, and the ribbed collar introduces a quieter pattern beneath her chin. I kept the surrounding landscape soft so those details could remain close to the face without competing with it.

I remember the family being friendly, while her expression in this photograph is unsmiling and direct. The lines across her forehead and around her eyes are sharply visible, but I cannot turn those details into a biography. Our meeting was brief. What I can retain is the particular way she faced the camera, with her mouth closed and her gaze steady.

The grey space around her gives the portrait its balance. Nothing in that background needs to be identified for the photograph to work; it lets the eye return to the braids, the earrings, and above all her expression. For me, the image carries the unexpected human connection of a roadside stop, a small part of the journey that has stayed with me.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
