Stone Houses and Decorated Windows Climb the Hillside
Stone houses crowd a hillside in this photograph of Tibetan homes in China. White borders outline windows and corners, red roof edges add subdued colour, and small flags cross the spaces between buildings. I framed the scene closely, letting the layered architecture fill the image instead of setting it beneath a large expanse of sky.
The nearest house gives the eye a starting point with its broad wall and many small openings. Behind it, more facades rise in overlapping levels. Each has a slightly different arrangement of windows, balconies, and rooflines. Together they create an intricate pattern, but the repeated pale trim helps hold that variety together.
Steps and railings appear in the lower part of the photograph, adding routes through the tightly packed structures. Fine wires cross overhead, and the hillside remains visible at the top. These details matter to me because they keep the image connected to an inhabited place rather than turning the buildings into isolated architectural shapes.
I made this photograph in 2015. Its restrained colour brings out the warm stone, dark openings, and small red accents without overwhelming the finer details. The appeal is in looking through one layer to the next: finding a doorway, following a stair, then discovering another house beyond it. This is an architectural print for someone who enjoys the complexity and individual character of buildings seen together.
