Saddled Horse in Mongolia Black and White Photography
A Pale Horse Beneath Towering Clouds and Mountain Ridges
A week in a remote yurt camp gave me time to look beyond a passing view of Mongolia. I was living with nomadic eagle riders when I made this black and white photograph in 2023. The saddled horse stands on a rocky slope, with layered mountains behind it and a large bank of clouds above.
During that stay, I could watch the horses being used and waiting between journeys. This photograph keeps that experience close through the visible tack: saddle, stirrups, bridle and rope. I did not need a rider in the frame to show the animal's connection to the camp and the people I was staying with.
I left considerable space above the horse. The clouds rise through much of the tall composition, while the mountain ridges create darker bands behind its pale coat. At ground level, scattered stones and sparse grass provide a rougher texture. The trailing rope draws a fine line away from the horse across the foreground.
For me, the photograph works through the difference in scale. The horse is a clear, detailed subject, but it remains within a much larger landscape. Monochrome brings the coat, leather equipment, rock and clouds into a shared range of tones without flattening their textures. The image carries both the equestrian subject and the place where I encountered it, offering a view shaped by time spent in the camp rather than a quick roadside stop.
