Chengdu Giant Panda Close Portrait Colour Animal Photography
Rounded Ears and Dark Paws Against Green Bamboo
During my visit to a zoo in Chengdu, China, I photographed this giant panda at close range. Its face fills much of the vertical frame, with rounded dark ears above a pale forehead and one paw raised beside the muzzle. Green bamboo remains visible behind it, giving the portrait a natural setting without taking attention away from the animal.
The panda’s markings provide a strong starting point for the image, but the smaller details are what I enjoy looking at. Individual hairs catch the light across the forehead and cheeks. The dark eye patches frame the eyes, while the black paws introduce a much denser texture lower in the photograph. A few slender leaves appear close to the raised paw.
Colour keeps the pale fur warm and the background foliage green. Those quieter hues soften the contrast between the dark and light areas, so the portrait remains detailed rather than becoming a simple graphic pattern. I have kept the view close, allowing the face and paws to occupy most of the image while leaving enough bamboo around the edges to show the surroundings.
This animal portrait would suit someone who enjoys pandas and photographs that bring a familiar subject into closer view. As a print, it has an immediate focal point in the face, with fur, leaves and small highlights adding detail as you look longer. It preserves a particular moment from my Chengdu visit in 2015.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
