Jinshanling Sword Figures and Tree Stone Relief Photography
Raised Arms and Crossing Weapons Below Carved Horsemen
Raised swords and crossing weapons create the strongest lines in this Jinshanling relief photograph. The carved figures are arranged around a tree on the left, with mounted riders appearing along the upper edge. I photographed this section in 2015, interested in how the sculpted battle scene could be read through its gestures and shapes as well as its individual subjects.
The central figures have widely spaced legs and lifted arms, making their poses easy to follow. Other soldiers stand or lean around them, with fallen figures low in the frame. I like how these different positions create a dense composition while leaving areas of pale stone between the forms. The tree supplies a broader vertical element beside the many angled weapons.
Shallow shadows give the carving definition without breaking up its light overall colour. Clothing, hats, hands and horse shapes become clearer on closer inspection. The visible panel joints add straight lines across the relief, contrasting with the movement described by the sculpture itself.
For me, the appeal of this photograph lies in that mixture of detail and graphic structure. It offers a specific carved scene from Jinshanling, with enough variation to keep the eye moving around the frame. On a wall, the pale surface gives the subject a restrained presence, while the raised arms and weapons provide energy within it. I would choose it for an interest in Chinese travel imagery or sculpture where the composition becomes as engaging as the material.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
