Broad Eagle Wings Above a Rider Facing Open Hills
I chose the rear view for this photograph in Bayan-Ölgii, western Mongolia. The mounted eagle hunter faced into the open country, and his golden eagle spread its wings across almost the full width of the frame. From behind, the rider’s face disappears, but the relationship between the bird, the gloved arm, and the horse remains clear. I liked how that view brought the surrounding hills into the encounter rather than keeping them as a distant backdrop.
The eagle creates the broadest shape in the square composition. Its layered wing feathers extend upward and outward, while the pale tail fans below the darker body. The rider and horse form a narrower line underneath. A patterned belt, decorated clothing, loose reins, and the horse’s long tail add smaller textures through the lower half. I kept the hills soft enough to separate those details from the landscape, with the cloudy sky providing a lighter area behind the spread wings.
Black and white brings attention to the contrast between those large shapes and their fine surfaces. The bird’s reach registers immediately, then the glove, feathers, clothing, and reins become clearer on a closer look. I wanted to retain the sense of following the rider into the country ahead. As Mongolia wall art for a study, lodge, or living room, the photograph offers a strong central subject within an open landscape. It shows the hunter without relying on a facial portrait, holding the horse and eagle together in a view I found compelling from this position.
