Spread Wings Above a Rider and Horse Splashing Through Water
On a cold morning in Mongolia’s Khovd Province, I photographed an eagle hunter riding through a shallow river. The horse sends water upward around its legs, while the rider holds the eagle high with its wings spread. In black and white, the pale horse stands apart from the darker clothing, bird and rocky water below.
The eagle gives the upper part of the image a broad, irregular outline. Individual feathers separate along the wing edges, and the rider’s raised arm connects that shape to the figure beneath it. His coat carries visible decorative patterns that remain clear against the darker fabric. I wanted those details to stay part of the action rather than let motion obscure the whole scene.
Below, the horse moves toward the camera with one foreleg lifted. Bright splashes break across the darker surface of the river, adding smaller points of light to the stronger pale shape of the animal. Stones along the bank and low hills beyond establish the open setting without crowding the main figures.
What stayed with me was how several forms came together at once: wide wings, the rider’s raised arm, the horse’s forward movement and the water around it. The photograph keeps that moment within the landscape, leaving enough sky and hillside to show where it happened. It is a view I remember through both the energy of the crossing and the clear, open space around it.
